About the September 2011 Calendar

"The Rest" by Daniel Maidman
Happy Fifth Anniversary, Barebrush!—With the launch of the 2011-2012 art season, Barebrush continues to celebrate the nude. The September 2011 N*des-of-the-Month calendar is active and energetic, getting our sixth season off to a great start. Our guest curator, widely-shown artist, author and teacher, Sherry Camhy, is also energetic and inspiring. True to her lifelong fascination with materials (see March 2009 NOTM calendar), Camhy continues to intrigue, mentioning her current work in silverpoint on animal skin parchment. Her selections represent her sentiments well, as she put it:

I will be looking for artists who are honestly attempting to communicate their vision and have succeeded in a memorable manner.

"Sisters -Lead, Zinc and Titanium" by Janet A. Cook
The selection process was long, intense and elaborate. Camhy selected over 100 artworks in her first pass through the entries. The process of elimination was torturous. Camhy viewed and reviewed many of the works, reluctantly culling the selections with agonizing carefulness. Finally only 30 remained and she selected the Curators' Choice nominees. Camhy launches September with an oil painting, Eyes of an angel by Jeremy Holton of Mount Helena, Western Australia. "Outstanding," was her comment. Her four other Curators' Choice nominees are: an oil painting, The Rest, by Daniel Maidman of Brooklyn, NY; Sisters -Lead, Zinc and Titanium, an oil painting by Janet A. Cook, NY; Val_W_10-03-10--6AB, pinhole photography by Dan McCormack of Accord, NY; Model and Sculptures a pastel by Tai Lin of Linden NJ.

Three artworks are retiring: Father Time by Barebrush Featured Artist, Emily Stedman; Curators' Choice nominee, Eyes of an angel by Jeremy Holton; Waking by Christian Beels.

About the Barebrush Art Calendar Contests

Each of the artists selected for the calendar receives two (2) complimentary listings. Five artists, indicated by asterisks (*), are nominated for the Curators' Choice Awards. Curators' Choice nominees receive 8 additional complimentary listings. Barebrush curators (past and present) vote on the Curators' Choice nominees. The public is also invited to vote. The top three artists receive additional prizes. The public may also vote for "My Favorite N*de," the poll which includes all of the art in the calendar. The top three artists in "My Favorite N*de" receive one (1) complementary listing. Winners announced October 1st.

Winning art is historic and is viewable in the calendar archives (dating from 2006). Winning art becomes a permanent part of the history of Barebrush.com. In addition, each artwork's detail page show the date and curator of each calendar win as part of its Barebrush Provenance. The Barebrush program of retiring artworks which have been selected for three calendars is designed to encourage all artists to show their best new work and keep their online galleries fresh and interesting.

The goal of Barebrush is to increase the public awareness, acceptance and appreciation of the art of the nude. Online since 2006.

John Constable 'Cathedral Meadows' #art #painting #jeremyholton

I love this scratchy painting, it reminds me so much of one of my favourite artists Lloyd Rees, although perhaps it should be the other way around.

Frida Kahlo 'The Bride'

Loaded with sexual connotations.  Ah the fear of consumation!

Charles Burchfiled 'Night of the Equinox' #art #drawing #jeremyholton

This reminds me of Van Gogh in the staccato marks and swirling sky.  The sky creates a great feeling of instability but the drawing is anchored by the buildings on the right, however that leads to an inconsistency of style across the work, which is probably not a problem.
